Why Should We Learn Cantonese?

You may already be aware of the differences between Cantonese and Western languages. Cantonese is, after all, a tonal language with a writing system based on 3000-4000 Chinese characters!

Even though Cantonese appears to be a difficult language to master, it isn't as difficult as it appears when you use the appropriate tools and approach. Furthermore, studying Cantonese can provide you with several opportunities and allow you to completely immerse yourself in the local culture.

1. Being able to communicate in Cantonese opens up more professional opportunities.

Did you know that Hong Kong is the world's richest city and ranks third as a global financial centre (after New York and London)?

Hong Kong is not only an important financial hub in Asia, but it also has the highest Financial Development Index score and is the most competitive economy in the world. Hong Kong is home to most international institutions and businesses, as well as their Asian headquarters. Knowing the Cantonese language, culture, and business environment can help you settle significant talks, close big agreements, or even find new job prospects.

2. It will make Cantonese films, dramas and songs more enjoyable.

Another advantage to learn Cantonese is that it will allow you to watch movies and other forms of media in the local dialect.

Do you know who Bruce Lee is? What about Jackie Chan? Yun-fat Chow? Who is Wong Kar Wai? They were all from Hong Kong, after all!

Many of the films, dramas, and music produced in Hong Kong are well-known around the world. Not everything is also translated. You're losing out on a lot of the fantastic things that Cantonese pop culture has to offer unless you know Cantonese.

3. Learning a new language is a great way to exercise your brain.

Studies have demonstrated that learning a second language improves memory and keeps the brain healthy. This, in turn, may delay the start of Alzheimer's disease or dementia, giving the language student an extra five years of excellent life!

Cantonese also improves your musical ability because it includes nine tones.

4. The ability to communicate in Cantonese will enhance your travel experience.

Hong Kong is a beautiful city with plenty to see and do. This tiny city has it all: a beautiful skyline, various shopping arcades and marketplaces, and a variety of buzzing bars. Every year, millions of visitors flock to this busy metropolis (we are 293 times smaller than Norway with 1.4 times the population). Many tourists and expats have been captivated by the vibrant and cosmopolitan nightlife.

But wait, there's more!

Hong Kong has a rich cultural heritage and a distinct past. Learning Cantonese will make your trip experience much more enjoyable if you are culturally curious and appreciate in-depth travel. You may thoroughly explore and learn about the city, as well as immerse yourself in its culture.

5. You will be able to communicate with others in Cantonese.

Cantonese is the oldest and most widely spoken Chinese dialect in Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macau, and some surrounding areas in Guangxi's eastern region. It is the official language of Hong Kong and Macau, and it has long been the most widely spoken version of Chinese outside of China.

It is the most widely spoken dialect in Chinese communities in Canada, the United States of America, Australia, Europe, and Southeast Asia.
